Costs to Include in an Etsy Profit Calculation

Use this per-order Etsy cost checklist for shipping, materials, labor, packaging, advertising, listing fees, and other costs—without double-counting.

Shipping and fulfillment

  • Actual postage or shipping-label cost
  • Packaging: box, mailer, tape, inserts, labels, and protective material
  • Fulfillment or handling charges paid to another provider

Keep “shipping charged to buyer” separate from “actual shipping and label cost.” One is revenue; the other is your cost.

Product costs

  • Materials consumed by the item
  • Components or purchased inventory
  • Customization supplies
  • Waste allowance, if your allocation method includes it

Use a documented per-unit method for bulk purchases. Do not treat an allocation as a verified accounting rule.

Labor

Enter a labor amount you choose to allocate to the order. You may base it on production, customization, packing, or another consistent method. ProfitPerSale does not recommend a wage, classify workers, or determine tax treatment.

Advertising

Enter advertising spend you intentionally allocate to the order. If you select an Offsite Ads tier in the calculator, do not add the same Etsy Offsite Ads fee again as another advertising cost.

Listing fees and other order costs

Allocate the number of listing-fee units that applies to the order. Multi-quantity purchases and renewals may lead to more than one charge. Add other per-order costs only when they are not already captured elsewhere.

Costs outside the v0 calculator

The calculator does not automatically model income tax, self-employment tax, broad business overhead, refunds, credits, reserves, chargebacks, deposit fees, currency conversion, or every account-specific Etsy event. If these matter to your decision, review them separately with appropriate records or professional guidance.

Example checklist

For one order, a seller might enter:

  • Actual shipping: $4.00
  • Materials: $10.00
  • Labor allocation: $8.00
  • Packaging: $1.00
  • Other advertising: $0.00
  • Other per-order cost: $2.00
  • Listing-fee units: 1

This example totals $25.00 in seller costs before modeled Etsy fees. It does not claim those amounts are typical or recommended.
